Most of the work we do in Downtown San Diego comes from someone who has had us out before, or from a neighbor of theirs. That is the only marketing this trade really has.

Fridge went warm every afternoon and was fine again by morning, so I had myself convinced the compressor was going. He pulled the grille first and the coil was packed solid with lint off the laundry closet right beside it. Cleaned it, checked the freezer side, done in an hour.

Ice had gone small and hollow right before a convention week with people staying with us. He put a gauge on the water line, said the pressure that far up the building was marginal and the filter was two years old. New filter and the cubes came out full the next day.

Our wine cabinet stands out in the living space against the glass and it was losing a few degrees every afternoon while the panel still read what I set. He measured down at the bottles, cleared the grille where it was breathing into the island, remeasured. No part, and he said so plainly.

What people actually comment on

Almost never the repair itself — a working refrigerator is what was expected. What comes up again and again is the part around it: that the arrival window was real, that the price quoted was the price charged, and that the technician explained what had failed rather than presenting a total.

The second thing is that the appliance was serviced where it stood. Built-in units are fitted into cabinetry, often with stone worktops and panelled doors around them, and dragging one out to look at it risks more than the fault ever did. On this equipment the condenser is reached through the grille and the sealed system is designed for access in place.

Repairs that did not happen

Some of these reviews are for visits where nothing was replaced: a door seal reseated, a drain cleared, a filter that had never been changed. It is worth saying plainly that a diagnosis which ends in "this does not need a part" is a successful visit, and it is charged as a diagnosis rather than a repair.
