Wine columns where there is no cellar
In a high-rise there is no cellar, so the wine column is the cellar. That also means it is rarely tucked out of the way. Downtown it usually stands in the island, under a bar, or out in the living space against a wall of glass, which puts a glass appliance door in front of a west-facing exposure that takes full sun over the bay for the last hours of the day. The cabinet loses ground every afternoon and takes it back overnight, and the panel goes on reporting the set point the whole time, because the sensor is not sitting where the bottles are. We take the reading at bottle level, zone by zone, before we call anything a failed part.

When a column is installed in a living space rather than a kitchen, half the job is what the cabinet is being asked to fight: direct sun on the door for three hours a day, a grille pushed against a finished cabinet side with no clearance, or a unit built into an island where the discharge air has nowhere to go. We clean the condenser, restore the airflow path, verify the door seal, then measure again at the racks. If the numbers come back where they belong, that was the repair, and we will tell you so rather than fitting a compressor to a ventilation problem.

Will the column have to leave its opening for the repair?
Almost never. Built-in refrigeration is serviced in the opening: condenser behind a lift-off grille, with the evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermistors and control board reachable in place. In a condo that matters, because a 36 inch column often will not turn in the hallway it came down, and dragging one over a hardwood loft floor risks the panel and the flooring.
